Coronavirus and Your Freight: FAQ's and TransGroup UpdatesLocal governments across the world have raised the threat level of COVID-19 and are taking steps to reduce exposure which includes the closing of public facilities and private enterprises. We understand the severity of this fast-moving virus and wanted to take this moment to address a few frequently asked questions regarding TransGroup’s capacity to manage freight – both domestically and internationally:
What happens to my freight if my local TransGroup office is forced to limit or restrict personnel access during an outbreak?
Our first priority will be to contain and prevent the further spread of the virus through measures already laid out by the Department of Health and/or local jurisdictions. Operationally, healthy staff will be able to work remotely as our IT system is largely web based and also features a web chat feature allowing our staff to communicate quickly and easily (in addition to mobile phone). And, since our organization of 40+ offices in North America runs on the same operations platform, heavy workloads may be shifted to other offices to ensure freight moves uninterrupted.
What happens to my freight if warehouse staff is unable to perform daily duties?
TransGroup can shift warehousing, in the interim, to facilities in close proximity or to other TransGroup warehouse locations. We will advise on options should a scenario such as this take place, and work with you to minimize business impacts.
What happens to my freight if local ports, carriers, and freight forwarding businesses are forced to close?
As we're seeing this scenario unfold in California with the sudden closures of private business right now, we are seeking clarification if these closures pertain to the transport of goods and/or what goods are still allowed to be transported and in what capacity. Port closures will severely affect global trade and cause rates and transit times to be dynamic. There are usually alternatives and we encourage you to discuss options with your local TransGroup office.
What happens to my freight if an Air/LTL/FTL carrier needs to halt operations?
TransGroup carries contracts with many carriers which means we can shift loads with minimal impact.
What are drivers doing to limit exposure to themselves and customers?
TransGroup drivers are frequently cleaning truck cabs and materials that require touching (e.g. clipboards, cell phones, etc). In most cases, we are not allowing inside delivery, however, special arrangements can be made if proper safety precautions are met in advance and during delivery. Please contact your local TransGroup station to discuss options. Most of our carriers are following similar sanitation procedures and TransGroup continues to advocate for stringent sanitation efforts to be used.
What actions has TransGroup taken to address staff safety?
TransGroup has already restricted business travel and canceled several internal events, as well as trade shows and conferences, to reduce the risk of infection. Offices have been instructed to follow best practices laid out by the Center for Disease Control and local governments which include sanitary measures and limiting or restricting personal contact. As of this email, we have no reports of COVID-19 among staff.
What happens to my freight if my company is forced to halt business?
TransGroup can take steps to hold or re-route in-transit freight until your business is operational. In this scenario, we do ask for a 24-hour lead time if possible and cannot guarantee alternatives as government policies are changing very quickly.
What actions will TransGroup take should a staff member test positive for COVID-19?
Should a staff member test positive, the local TransGroup office will immediately call for staff to work remotely and monitor the health of staff accordingly. During this time, the local office will also be professionally sanitized and quarantined for a duration deemed necessary by the Department of Health. During a closure, staff are prepared and equipped to continue work remotely.
