What is TransNeutral? |
| |
TransNeutral is an opt-in program offered by TransGroup Worldwide Logistics to its customers.
Opting-in to TransNeutral enables you to 'green' your shipments and make a positive difference for our collective
environment with every pound you ship. For every ton of CO2 a TransNeutral shipment produces, another ton is taken
away, or prevented - permanently and transparently. That's the TransNeutral promise! |
| |
|
 |
How does TransNeutral ‘green’ my shipment? |
| |
First, we use a weight-based calculation to determine the amount of climate-effecting GHG that
your shipment emits; then, we help offset those GHGs by contributing to GHG Emission Reduction programs involving
reforestation, wind power and biofuel related farm renewal projects.
The projects we support are all listed on the Chicago Climate Exchange. Through stringent oversight and auditing,
these projects accumulate exchangeable carbon credits based on the amount of GHGs they reduce or prevent. These credits
are then sold on the CCX in the form of Carbon Financial Instruments (CFI). Each CFI is equivalent to 100 metric tons
of CO2 that was removed, or prevented from entering into the atmosphere. Corporations subject to emission regulations
can use CFIs to satisfy regulatory requirements. For example, a coal burning power plant that is required to reduce
emissions by 6%, but only achieves a reduction of 5%, can purchase (and permanently retire) the appropriate amount of
CFI’s to achieve (offset) the additional 1% reduction needed to fulfill the requirement.
TransNeutral 'greens' your shipment in the same manner. Through our partnership with Driveneutral.org (an affiliate
of the Presidio School of Management – a CCX member) We purchase and permanently retire large blocks of CFIs, then
allocate the appropriate portion of those CFI’s to your TransNeutral shipments - thus offsetting the GHGs that
shipment produced. |
| |
|
 |
Can TransNeutral’s customers buy credits directly from the Chicago Climate Exchange? |
| |
Only CCX members can trade credits on the exchange. That’s where TransNeutral’s partnership
with DriveNeutral comes in. Their parent organization, the Presidio School of Management, is an Associate member of
CCX. The School buys and permanently retires blocks of carbon credits, which TransNeutral purchases with the
dollars collected from each opt-in customer’s shipment. |
| |
|
 |
How will I know the results of my participation in TransNeutral? |
| |
You can monitor the offsets associated with your shipments by receiving a quarterly TransNeutral
Greening Report that details your specific results. |
| |
|
 |
Is TransNeutral a ‘License’ to pollute? |
| |
No. TransNeutral is simply a convenient and effective way for our customers to mitigate the
climate-effecting impact that their shipments have on the environment. |
| |
|
 |
Is TransNeutral a non-profit initiative? |
| |
Yes. As a corporate environmental stewardship initiative, every dollar we collect when
our customers opt-in, goes directly toward the purchase and subsequent retirement of CFI’s. The more customers
that choose to opt-in, the more CFI’s we retire – thus, the more CO2 we remove from, or prevent from entering
into the environment. |
| |
|
 |
Why is TransNeutral a nonprofit initiative? |
| |
Presently, commercial shipping is the world’s third largest source of climate-effecting toxic
substances (1), and GHG emissions are expected to increase as global trade expands. As a leader in Transport Logistics,
we at TransGroup feel a responsibility to the planet and to our industry. By operating as a not-for-profit venture,
TRANSNEUTRAL is not only able to maximize the GHG offset for each of our opt-in customers, but also to work collectively
toward preserving the environment and preventing climate change from driving commercial transportation the way of the
dinosaur.

 |
How does TransNeutral determine the CO2 emissions a shipment is responsible for? |
| |
We use averages and statistics based on our past shipment records and official agencies, such as the
USDOT and USEPA to determine a benchmark of CO2 emission per pound shipped. While this is not a perfect calculation for
looking at any specific shipment ‘under a microscope’, we feel that it averages out equitably when looking at the aggregate
volume of shipments. Therefore, we feel that this method is the best way to help our non-regulated customers proactively
offset the CO2 emissions their shipments are responsible for. |
| |
|
 |
Can TransNeutral help my company meet its regulatory requirements for CO2 emission reductions? |
| |
Yes. TransNeutral will work with our customers who are required to meet regulated standards, to customize
our calculation and reporting method to meet those specific requirements. |
| |
|
 |
How does TransNeutral ensure that the CFI’s it purchases represent real CO2 reductions? |
| |
TransNeutral only supports projects whose results can be verified by an independent third
party - period. Our partnership with DriveNeutral enables us to do just that, by facilitating the purchase of
emission reduction credits directly through the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), which supplies the highest quality,
third-party-verified and legally accountable emissions reductions credits available. |
| |
|
 |
Can TransNeutral help my company contribute to a project we specify, but is not associated with the CCX? |
| |
Yes. Our partnership with DriveNeutral gives us access to experts that can facilitate contributions
to non-CCX member projects that are equally monitored to ensure the efficacy of their GHG reduction efforts. Therefore, if
you wish to support a project that you think may be appropriate for TransNeutral funds, please contact us. |
| |
|
 |
Do you only support carbon-reducing projects in the US? |
| |
Not necessarily, but we prefer to ‘act locally’ when possible - especially since the results of CO2
reductions in any given location have a positive impact globally.
We feel that supporting carbon-reducing projects ‘close-to-home’ creates a deeper social connection between our efforts and
the contributions of our customers. In other words, when the results are more tangible and evident, it helps to legitimize the
value of the collective effort and also ad impact and value to the public relations aspect - which is a side benefit to those
who participate. |

What is meant by carbon neutralizing, or carbon offsetting? |
| |
Neutralizing or offsetting is basically counterbalancing. Encarta describes carbon-neutralizing
as: counteracting release of carbon dioxide: relating to the maintenance of a balance between producing and using
carbon, especially balancing carbon-dioxide emissions by activities such as growing plants to use as fuel or planting
trees in urban areas to offset vehicle emissions. |
| |
|
 |
How is it possible to carbon-neutralize shipments? |
| |
By opting-in to TransNeutral, you are funding large-scale emissions reductions projects that result in verifiable
CO2 reductions. Shipments are carbon-neutralized through the purchase and retirement of CFIs, which represent real, verifiable amounts of
carbon emissions that were reduced, or never created, as a result of those projects. In other words, if your shipments resulted in 25,000
lbs. of CO2 emissions last year, your opt-in contributions will purchase 25,000 lbs. pounds of verified CO2 reductions – thereby
offsetting, or ‘neutralizing’ the CO2 emissions that your shipments resulted in. |
